Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms include joint pain and inflammation. The condition is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the lining of the joints.

This causes swollen and inflamed joints, which can be very painful.

But, eating more fibre-rich foods could help to reduce some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, studies have revealed.

"Eating a high-fibre diet can yield many rewards," said the Arthritis Foundation.

"Fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and whole grains provide a boost of vitamins, minerals, protein and healthy nutrients.

"They might also help lower markers of inflammation - a key factor in many forms of arthritis."

Fibre-rich diets could also lower the amount of C-reactive proteins (CRP) in the blood, which are markers for rheumatoid arthritis.

High-fibre foods help to feed beneficial, healthy bacteria in the gut, said the Arthritis Foundation.

The bacteria can then release substances that promote lower levels of inflammation across the entire body.

"Lower inflammation may have to do less with fibre itself, than with healthy plant chemicals called phytonutrients found in fibre-rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains," it said.

Eating only fibre-rich foods could lower the amount of CRPs in the body by between 25 to 54 per cent, according to a 2009 study.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 400,000 people in the UK.

The condition usually develops when a person is between 40 and 50 years old, said the NHS.

The auto-immune condition could lead to fatigue, a fever, sweating, weight loss and a poor appetite.

Inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis may also cause dry eyes and chest pain.
